Master bedroom.
A master bedroom should be a space for relaxation, not clutter. A tidy space is more restful and peaceful for the occupant to recharge at the end of the day. By removing the piles and boxes that had accumulated there and by rotating the bed to unblock the window, we created a relaxing retreat that is easy to maintain.

Bar niche. From chaotic to collected: this bar niche included lots of bottles that had been forgotten about because they weren't VISIBLE. We got rid of the bottles the client didn't like, grouped the remaining bottles by type (bourbons, vodkas, etc.), and stored the bottles by height (taller in the back).
The decorative glass decanters were moved to the less-prime real estate on top of the cabinet, while the most frequently used glassware moved to reachable shelves. |
Office closet. The closet can become a storage spot for anything that doesn't otherwise have a home, but it doesn't HAVE to be. Once we removed all the boxes, sorted photos and books, and reorganized the contents of the closet, there was more space than we knew what to do with!

Bonus: All the books fit beautifully into a matching set of bookcases on the other side of the room!

Before and after photos are fun to look at, but they don’t show the whole story. In this case, there were clothes on the couch that needed to be put away, yes, but they were evidence of a dysfunctional laundry system that can’t be seen. Clean laundry would be dumped onto the couch as a place to await folding and hanging. But see the dog cage to the right of the couch? If Fido has been sitting on that couch where the clean laundry is later dumped, the clothes are no longer clean, but have dog hair and whatever the dog tracked in on them. Also, this made the living-room couch unusable.
What you also can’t see from the before/after photos is that the laundry machines are on the ground level of the house, but all the clothes closets are on the upper story. That means all the empty clothes hangers are upstairs, but all the laundry is being washed and dried then laid out on the couch on a different floor than the hangers. A new laundry system had to be created! Revise Your Space suggested this homeowner use the laundry basket to take the clean clothes UPstairs to a central laundry area (either a folding table or the client’s bed would work) that was at least on the same floor as the bedroom closets and hangers. It was not going to work for this client to collect up all the empty hangers, schlep them downstairs, and fold or hang possibly dog-hair-covered clothes just because the couch was a flat surface: it was too many steps! By taking the clothes directly upstairs, the client was able to save trips up and down the stairs, making life easier! |
